What Qualifies

When to Call Us the Same Day

Not every concern needs a same-day visit, but these do. If you're unsure, call anyway. We'll talk it through with you and let you know what to do before you arrive.

Call Right Away

Knocked-Out Adult Tooth

A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance of being saved when it's seen within 30 minutes. Keep it moist in milk or tucked inside your cheek, and call us on your way in.

Call Right Away

Swelling in the Gum or Face

Swelling, a small bump on the gum or a fever can be signs of an infection that should be treated promptly, so call us as soon as you notice them. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the nearest emergency room.

Call Right Away

Bleeding That Won't Stop

After an injury to the lips, tongue or gums, hold clean gauze on the area with gentle, steady pressure. If the bleeding hasn't slowed, call us. For a serious injury to the face or jaw, go to the nearest emergency room.

Toothache

A toothache that lingers or keeps coming back usually means a tooth needs care. Rinse with warm water, gently floss around the tooth, and call us so we can find the cause and help you feel comfortable again.

Call Today

Broken or Cracked Tooth

A crack can let bacteria reach the inner part of a tooth, so it's best to have it checked soon. Rinse with warm water, save any pieces, and give us a call.

Call Us Soon

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown leaves the tooth unprotected. Dental cement from a pharmacy can cover it for now, and we'll arrange a proper repair when you call.

What to Do Before Your Visit

These steps can help protect the tooth and keep you comfortable until we see you. Call us first, and we'll walk you through what fits your situation.

KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH

Keep the Tooth Safe

  1. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root
  2. If it's dirty, rinse it gently with water only; don't scrub or dry it
  3. If you can, ease it back into the socket and close your mouth slowly to hold it in place
  4. If not, keep it moist in milk or inside your cheek, not in tap water
  5. Call us and come in right away, ideally within 30 minutes
TOOTHACHE

Stay Comfortable Until Your Visit

  1. Rinse your mouth with warm water
  2. Gently floss to remove any food caught between your teeth
  3. Hold a cold compress on the outside of your cheek if there's swelling
  4. Don't place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth
  5. If you take an over-the-counter reliever, follow the label directions
  6. Call us to be seen today
BROKEN OR CRACKED TOOTH

Protect the Tooth

  1. Save any pieces of the tooth you can find
  2. Rinse your mouth with warm water
  3. If the area is bleeding, hold clean gauze on it with gentle pressure
  4. Use a cold compress on your cheek to ease swelling
  5. Chew on the other side until we see you
LOST FILLING OR CROWN

Temporary Protection

  1. Keep the crown if it came out in one piece
  2. Dental cement, toothpaste or denture adhesive can hold a crown in place for now
  3. Don't use super glue or household adhesives
  4. Chew on the other side
  5. Call us to schedule a repair visit
